Mastering the Art of Setting Boundaries


In this episode, we're diving into a topic so near and dear to my heart: boundaries. As the Boldness Coach, I have had my share of experiences when it comes to understanding and setting boundaries, and let me tell you, it’s been one of the most important yet challenging aspects of maintaining overall health and wellness.


Setting boundaries is essential for our well-being. Boundaries are those clear lines that separate our personal space, emotions, needs, and values from those of others. They act as protectors of our energy and help maintain our individual health.


However, setting boundaries is often a struggle, especially for women who are natural nurturers and givers. We give so much to those we love, to our community, to family, friends, and colleagues. But in giving so much, we often find ourselves depleted.


Here’s a litmus test: if you end your day feeling utterly exhausted and emotionally drained after fulfilling the relentless requests and demands from others, it’s a clear sign that you need to set some boundaries. You see, when you go through your day taking care of everyone else and by the time you get home, you have nothing left for yourself, that's a red flag.


You might find you haven't taken care of your own health, you're emotionally and mentally drained, and by nighttime, all you want is to collapse into bed without another thought. Sound familiar? Then, sis, it's time to set boundaries.


Often, we don't notice when we're overextending ourselves until it's too late, much like how I used to be. I was constantly on the go, calling friends, checking on everyone, convincing myself I could do it all because it was "just me." But in reality, I was searching for external validation by over-giving, hoping it would fill a void within me. The truth hit me hard when I realized that no rewards were coming from my ceaseless giving. The thank you’s, the appreciation, the imagined reciprocation never materialized. Instead, I was left feeling empty, like all my efforts were in vain.


Why? Because I wasn’t honoring my worth or valuing myself. I had to face the fact that I had emotional and self-care needs that I wasn’t addressing. It was this realization that unveiled the power in saying no. Starting to say no transformed everything for me.


Saying no is not just a complete sentence; it’s an affirmation of your self-worth.


It means you recognize the need to recharge your own batteries before you can be there for others. And while it's a mantra—a complete sentence—we often struggle to apply it universally.


We might manage to say no to a few people, but not to everyone we should. The goal here, my dear listeners, is to be audaciously daring in setting your boundaries. Be bold enough to say no without feeling the need to explain yourself. This includes saying no to family members, friends, colleagues, and anyone who may overstep your personal limits.


In your journey of setting boundaries, remember it’s not just about saying no; it’s about prioritizing self-care and maintaining your personal well-being. Taking even 5-15 minutes a day for self-care, whether it's a morning walk, gratitude, or meditation, is vital. This simple act of prioritizing yourself can make a world of difference. When you start establishing and respecting your own boundaries, you’ll notice a shift not just in how others treat you, but in how you treat yourself. You’ll find you have more energy, you're clearer-minded, and most importantly, you're honoring your own worth.


So, let’s be bold together. Embrace the power of saying no, set those necessary boundaries, and step into your most empowered self. Reflect on where you need to set boundaries, both emotionally and professionally. Do your homework, identify your personal values and boundaries, and let’s move forward with no permission needed.
